Shamanic Drums: Welcome

Benefits of Shamanic Drumming

The shamanic drum is one of the most important tools in shamanic practice. It is a guide, teacher, healer, and friend that is essential on the shamanic path. Second only to the voice, the drum is the oldest instrument. Since our ancestors drummed on hollowed logs and animal skins stretched over wooden hoops, these instruments have been a vital part of every culture. From the Laplanders to the Siberian shamans, from Irish bodhrans to Native American dhol drums, from indigenous Americans to Australian Aborigines, the rhythms of drums have led us to song, dance, and journeys through worlds.

Shamanic drumming, unlike other types of drumming, usually refers to the use of extended, repetitive drum rhythms. These drum rhythms have a range of physiological effects on the body, but particularly important for shamanic practitioners is their effectiveness in altering states of consciousness. These sustained rhythms act like sound controllers, causing a change in your brain rhythms from the busy Beta state to a trance-like Theta state, optimal for shamanic journeying.

The drum was essential in every community worldwide and was the next best thing until sliced bread. Nowadays, there is a revival of drum use as individuals experience the benefits of this wonderful instrument. Here are just a few:

1. Drumming allows for self-expression

Shamanic drumming allows individuals to express themselves in a non-verbal way to others. For many, talking about their feelings is still difficult. It's a shame, and I wish we were a society in which people feel safe talking about their feelings with others. However, give them a drum, and people will start expressing themselves creatively and passionately.

2. Drumming allows for a deeper self-awareness

Drumming creates synchronisation of brain function and makes the left and right sides work more harmoniously. Drumming in time is a good time for you, feeling relaxed and happy and a chance to reflect and contemplate your current situation from a slightly different perspective. In this more relaxed and deeper Theta state, you are able to see things from a slightly different perspective than normal and it may help you see life in a different light.

3. Drumming is good for your health

Aside from the obvious exercise that playing the drum for many hours gives, shamanic drumming has several documented health benefits. From combating stress to aiding in the healing of pain, blood pressure, immune function, and recovery from stroke, the drum should definitely be in every medicine cabinet.

4. Drumming brings communities together

Gathering together with drums and playing the rhythm together breaks down barriers between people, promotes social cohesion within that group, encourages listening to each other, sharing the responsibility of leading and following the rhythm, and provides an activity where everyone is creatively focused on one thing together.
